Puerto Rico was invaded by the U.S. in 1898 and ceded by Spain after the Spanish-American War. In 1917, Puerto Ricans were granted U.S. citizenship under the Jones Act.
Two months later, the U.S. passed the Selective Service Act.

About 20,000 Puerto Ricans were drafted to fight in World War I.

Historians agree: one of the key motivations for granting citizenship was to make Puerto Ricans eligible for the draft.

Puerto Ricans have fought and died in America’s name. It’s long overdue that they be allowed to vote for President.

Fishbone is one of the most legendary, massively influential, and under-appreciated bands in America. Phenomenal songwriters who have been making civics sexy for four decades.
